Whispering Winds Bible Camp

History:
Bible Impact Ministries was originally known as Rural Bible Crusade, and was started in the early 1900's as a method of getting Scripture into unchurched homes. The original plan was to go to rural one-room school houses and present a Scripture memory contest to the students. For memorizing 500 verses, a child could earn a week at camp. This program continued until the early 60's when the Bible and prayer were removed from the public schools. At that time we changed our focus and began Bible memory clubs. In the early 90's we changed our name to Bible Impact Ministries to better reflect our new focus. Ten years ago we acquired our own campground called Whispering Winds Bible Camp south of St. James where our national headquarters is also located. We now have a program called "Bible in Me" for 1st-6th graders which is similar to AWANA, but works better for smaller churches who can't afford the AWANA program. We also have a Ministering Youth program which churches may use for teens which emphasizes service, personal devotions, and memorizing Scripture instead of just entertaining the young people.
Memorization program:
The current program is set up that the first year to earn camp, the student learns 200 verses. He needs to be 8 years old by the time camp starts, but you don't have to wait until he is 7 to start. I began my children in kindergarten learning the verses. After the first verse, John 3:16, is learned, the child can send in to get a free pen. Then when each pamphlet of 50 verses is completed, the child receives a gift. The gifts for the 200 verses are a New Testament, a name plaque, a Christian book, and finally a leather-bound Bible with his or her name on the front along with an $80 scholarship toward a week at our camp the next summer. The following years the child may either learn another 100 verses or do an 8 month correspondence course to receive a camp scholarship. If he does both, he will also receive a free t-shirt. Young people may continue to come to camp until they are 20. We have a junior camp for ages 8-12, and a teen camp for 13-20 year olds. This program not only teaches Scripture, but also as the children get older, they are given the opportunity to serve at camp by cleaning, working in the kitchen, & counseling. We also have a strong missionary emphasis each week at camp, and try to have a pastor and a missionary for each week of camp to minister to the children.

There is NO CHARGE for taking part in the memorizing. There is a registration fee of @$50 for attending the camp if the scholarship is earned. Your child can also pay to attend camp if he doesn't finish memorizing the verses. The scholarship is worth $80. If you want to call or e-mail to get a copy of the first set of verses or to ask any questions, feel free. The phone number is 1-800-748-7410 or you can e-mail Melody Zinc at info@bibleimpact.org. You may also go to our website: www.bibleimpact.org.

You are welcome to visit Whispering Winds Bible Camp and the BIM headquarters at 599 Mound Ridge Road in Cook Station, MO (about 8 miles south of St. James on Hwy. 68, turn left on Hwy. NN. Go several miles and turn left on Mound Ridge Road, right after the slab bridge. The camp is about 2 miles up the road on the right.)

Classes

I (Denise McClanahan) am planning to offer another Understanding the Times class on Worldviews this coming school year on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 -4:30, September - April (with some breaks, especially over the winter holidays). We will be using the Summit Ministry DVD's and two books (which parents will have to purchase.) The DVD lectures, readings with follow-up questions, and research will help the student strengthen his/her Biblical foundation of the Christian worldview and compare its tenets with those of Islam, Secular Humanism, Marxism, New Age and Postmodernism ir order to prepare them to better defend their faith and to not lose their faith if they are attend college or find themselves among unbelievers. See http://www.summit.org/curriculum/hs/ for a description of the class.

Depending on what the parents decide, the student can (1) just come for the DVD and discussion or (2) he/she can also do the readings/questions, tests, a research paper, speech and debate or (3) some agreed upon modified version of (2). For those of you who are familiar with last year's class, we don't plan to have as much homework as before.

This course can be counted as one Social Studies credit if you choose for your child to take the full homework plan. Otherwise, it would be between 1/4 and 1/2. This class will be girls only rather than coed.

If you read the website's write up about the curriculum, it says it is for high school seniors. A younger child could take it if he/she is capable of reasoning skills and is interested in worldviews. Last year, we had a variety of ages from Junior High to 12th grade in our last class and most seemed to benefit from the videos and discussions although the older students seemed better able to discuss the subjects.

Some have asked if I will offer this class again and I can't say for sure what God will want me to do after my last child graduates this year, but its a possibility.

We plan to meet in our home - just East of Rolla about 1 minute from the city limits on Quail Run.

I am asking for each student to give $15 per month or a barter of equal value.

If you would like for me to keep you posted on the class information, answer questions or sign up your child and gether books; you can email me at:
mcclan5@fidnet.com or call me at 573-427-2627. Denise McClanahan (2007-2008)

HSLDA--Constitutional Law Class offered by Michael Farris

Do you want to not only be able to interpret Supreme Court cases but also build a foundation for evaluating future judicial decisions? Learn constitutional law with Michael Farris! You will study our nation's founding documents and precedent-setting Supreme Court cases. You'll be challenged to dig deeper and ask the tough questions, "What did the Founders really intend?" "How have we upheld their vision?" "Have we surpassed it in any way?" "In what ways have we betrayed it?" You'll learn to interpret legal terms and become familiar with complex judicial and legislative concepts. And throughout, you will broaden your understanding of and appreciation for the Constitution of the United States.

Now Dr. Farris is offering his high school-level Constitutional Law course with a brand new textbook. Last year's required text Constitutional Law for Christian Students has been updated to include material on some of the Supreme Court's most recent decisions and more material demonstrating the original intentions of the founders.  A copy of this new textbook Constitutional Law for Enlightened Citizens will be shipped to students upon registration, along with an audio CD-ROM containing recorded lectures given by Dr. Farris (supplemented by the discussions of a live class).  These lectures are provided in MP3 format for easy playback on multiple audio devices.

If on-line students have questions, they can pose them to Dr. Farris using our secure Internet forum. This approach allows all students to see and learn from the questions and Dr. Farris' answers. Also, ten times during the course (approximately every other week), Dr. Farris will hold a secure Internet chat session with students for "live," text-based discussion.

The secure forums and chat center are also available for student-to-student discussion throughout the entire duration of the course. All posted content is logged, and a strict code of conduct is enforced.

A former bar examiner, Dr. Farris will also pose both a mid-term and final bar-style exam question for the students to research and answer. The exams are intended to test the student's ability to apply the material taught to a fictitious legal scenario. Answers are written in essay format. Dr. Farris will review, critique, and grade each student's midterm and final exam answer, returning them to the student upon completion.

Students who successfully complete the course will receive a letter grade on each test and a certificate of completion.

Slated for 18 sessions, this high school-level course will be offered twice during the school year—a Fall class and a Spring class. Students can enroll to start in either September or January (see syllabus for details). Tuition is $250 for HSLDA members and $275 for non-HSLDA members, and is due in full upon registration. Late enrollments may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Tuition is $250 for HSLDA members and $275 for non-HSLDA members,
which includes the required textbook and CD-ROM. For more information,
or to register, visit the class website at http://conlaw.hslda.org.

Note: this class is a non-credit, high school level online course taught by Michael Farris through HSLDA. It should not be confused with the for-credit, college level distance learning course also taught by Michael Farris through Patrick Henry College.

Audobon Bird Art Contest
2007-2008 Ozark Rivers Audubon Bird Art Contest

The Ozark Rivers Chapter of the National Audubon Society announces the sixth annual bird art competition.
Last year two hundred and seven fourth grade students submitted entries from five local public schools and one home school. Prizes were awarded to the first through third place winners from each school. The best of show winner received a pair of Audubon binoculars. Chapter members hope the students learn about birds and the environment while developing their artistic skills.
This year the Chapter is bringing to Rolla a world touring educator and performer (visit: http: //www.foxtalesint.com) who will bring to life John James Audubon. He will present a program for the public at the Chapter's evening meeting on Monday, December 10. He has also agreed to present his Audubon interpretative program to three local schools on the days of December 10 and 11.
Also, the Chapter has agreed to cooperate with Arts Rolla! on their annual Children's Exhibition that will be held at the Centre, April 2008. The winners will show their art in conjunction with the art submitted to the Arts Rolla! Competition.
Combining the Audubon performance and exhibition will hopefully generate more participation in this year's bird art contest.
The theme for this year is birds that were seen by Audubon on an excursion up the Missouri River in 1843. Ten birds (one now extinct) have been selected. Students and teachers are encouraged to visit the Missouri Audubon Society website at http://www.mobirds.org/ for more information.
Enclosed is a list of the birds, poster with examples of Audubon's art, contest rules, entry form, and suggested lesson plan for drawing birds.
The Chapter will provide a 50 lb bag of oiled black sunflower seeds to each school that has established bird feeders, upon request. The students are encouraged to study the birds during visitations for developing skills of observation as a component of inquiry and data gathering.
All art will be picked up by a Chapter member on Monday, March 20, 2008. The winning art will be exhibited for the month of April at the Centre in Rolla. Awards will be presented to the students during the reception for the Arts Rolla! Children's Art Competition and Exhibition. All other art and certificates for participation will be returned to the schools on Monday, March 31, 2008.
All participants will receive a certificate for participation. Honorable mention winners will receive a ribbon and Audubon Coloring Book. Third, second, and first place winners will receive a ribbon and bird guide book. The Best of Show winner will receive a ribbon and a pair of Audubon binoculars.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to call me. I can be reached at: unicorn1@fidnet.com or by telephone: 573-426-5616.

HOMESCHOOL LEVEL SPELLING BEE Hosted By SHARE
Hosted by St. Louis Homeschooling Activities Resources and Encouragement (SHARE) Support Group
Saturday, January 19, 2008
December 1, 2007 is the registration deadline

(inclement weather alternative date is Saturday, January 26).
Participants are required to arrive by 9:00 a.m. and
the spelling bee will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m., at
Bayless Baptist Church, 8512 Morganford, St. Louis, MO 63123
For grades K-8 - open to all homeschooled children in the St. Louis and surrounding areas.
Change in format: This year we have a new format. Grades K-2 will compete first, then grades 3-5, then grades 6-8. The winner of each grade group will compete in the final, decisive round. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners in each grade category, with a special award to the overall first place winner who will then go on to the St. Louis Post Dispatch regional spelling bee and, hopefully, to the Scripps-Howard national spelling bee. SHARE will also be issuing participant awards.

The reason for the change is:
*To expand involvement of younger children and give them a sense of "rounds".
*To have a better "flow" of the event.
*To be comparable to public school flow.
*To give children more opportunity to compete with only their peers.

The study guide is online this year. It is highly suggested that you do not just teach your children how to memorize a list of words but to teach principles of good spelling.

The official study guide is the Webster's Third New International Dictionary and its addenda section, copyright 2002, Merriam-Webster.
Please go to the following websites for more information:
*Spell It! The Online Study Guide: http://www.myspellit.com
*Rules for Local Spelling Bees: http://spellingbee.com/rules.asp
Registration fee: $5.00 per child. Make checks payable to SHARE and send them to Cathy Mullins.

For more information, contact Vickie Struckmann, e-mail Gregor_lass@sbcglobal.net phone: 636-916-1990
All participants will be asked to bring a dish for the potluck afterward and to help with clean up.

In fairness to others we will be forced to disqualify late arrivals.
