The St. Louis Gateway Arch Riverfront management  http://www.gatewayarch.com/Arch/  and the National Parks Service   has formed a new Homeschool Advisory Board to include home schoolers in events and gain input from us how they can better serve our home schooling families. One of the St. louis HS support group leaders contacted me to be apart of the meeting. The St. Louis Gateway Arch Riverfront people were very accomodating and we all got lunch and to take a river cruise. The #1 thing I learned is,,, they offer great rates for educational groups ( That means us!! :)

I am working on setting up a day where we( Rolla Area Homeschoolers) can go as a group tour!

The information I have so far is:

Fees for groups of 30 to 40 people are( Theses are GREAT prices!!! ):

Park Ranger Guided educational Boat tours = $4 per child or adult

Arch educational tram ride = $7 per adult
                                          $3 per child

Musem of Westward expansion = Free and we would get to choose up to three topics for our tour.
The topics are:
Plains Indians    Pioneers    Homesteaders    Mountain Men    Cowboys    Lewis and Clark

Group movies   (there is not a group rate for the movies, but they do offer groups one complimentary ticket with every 19 that are purchased, basically the 20th ticket is free)

The Court House guided tour (only for educational groups)- Free , but limited space no more that 30 people per tour.
If we have alot of interest in this I will set up two separate group tours.
We can choose two 45 minute guided tours
Tour topics are:
General building tour
St. Louis through the years
Trial reenactments:
    The Bubble Gum trial
Freedom Suit: Dred Scott v Irene Emerson
Trial for the Right to Vote: Minot v Happersett
Segregation Laws in the 1800's Williams v Bellefontaine

We do not have to pay ahead for the Gateway Arch Riverfront unless we include their lunches ( see site above ).

What I need to know is:

1.How many of you are interested and

2.what month/day of the week would you all want to go, and

3. What events would you like me to put on our groups scedule?

I can't promise I will be able to accomodate all of you but I will try my best to make it a great day for all the families interested in going. ! : )

Please respond to Suzanna Embry dsembry@centurytel.net or 573-259-7493

Also,, the National Parks Service and the Gateway Arch Riverfront are sending me flyers for an amazingly full of education day here in Missouri called Park Palooza! I will bring them to the CHESS picnic but if you would like a sneak peak please go to this site: http://www.parkpalooza.org/

Other things of interest offered for you to do on your own are:
Other programs are offered  for girls scouts and boy scouts
The quadcycles are great fun, they have two, four and six seater ones
Helicopter rides  (They offer three different tours ranging from $29-$99 per person)

Thank you! Hope all of you are having a great school year!

My name is Bethany French, Coaching Director for Home Grown Programmers (HGP) with Automation Excellence.  (www.homegrownprogrammers.com, www.automation-excellence.com).   In a world where technology is daily increasing in importance, training in computer skills is something that children need for later success in most educational or career paths.  I believe that Home Grown Programmers would be an excellent resource for home-schooling families with middle school and high school age students in this association!  Home Grown Programmers presents an opportunity for homeschoolers to enroll in online Computer Science classes taught by professional programmers and software engineers in a unique partnership with home-school families.

The program offers introductory and advanced classes in several different programming languages, website design and management, computer graphics, basic computer text applications, as well as more advanced classes.  These classes are interactive, and the parent/mentor partnership allows for personalized instruction based on the needs of the students.  One parent from each registered family will be able to audit the class their child is taking for free.  We are not only interested in helping families provide their children with an opportunity to learn technical skills, but are also interested in investing in the next generation's character, independence, creativity, and life skills.

Students who excel in the advanced classes may qualify for a paid apprenticeship with Automation Excellence, providing them with real job experience in the Computer Science field.  This gives homeschoolers an edge in the job market as well as providing high-school computer science credits for college applications, and an advantage over public and even private high school computer science programs.  The home-schooling parents provide the mentors and their child help with the learning process, and the mentors provide the technical and professional expertise, assignments, and challenges.

I would be glad to talk with anyone and provide information on this program or schedule a presentation with your home schooling group.  Homeschooling Parents who are interested in becoming affiliates may sign up on our website to receive an affiliate code, and earn a free class for their children for every 15 new students who sign up online using their code.  Homeschooling organizations may sign up to become affiliates as well, and use the free classes earned to raffle off during fundraisers, or use as door prizes.  The website for this feature is in the process of development, so anyone interested can contact me and we will set up your affiliate status manually.  To access more information and my presentation online, you can go to http://www.homegrownprogrammers.com/content/home-grown-programmers-presentation.

Feel free to contact me with questions or for more information via e-mail at bfrench@homegrownprogrammers.com, skype instant messaging at Bethany.R.French, or by phone at (704) 960-4580.

(I have not personally checked into this, so please use caution)

Hello, my name is Bill Orr.  I work for the Missouri Department of Mental Health / Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

I take 16 and 17 year old youth to places that sell cigarettes and the youth attempts to purchase cigarettes to test the

outlet  to see if the clerk will ask for ID.  This is to educate the merchants to abide by Missouri laws 407.925 RSMo. through 407.934 RSMo.

This October 5th will be the 10th anniversary for me being a Health Representative.  We are not law enforcement.  We simply go into the outlet, the youth attempts to make the purchase, if clerk ask for ID the youth presents a green “congratulations” card to the clerk,  and if they do not ask for ID the youth presents a yellow “caution” card.  These statistics are provided to the Federal Government to prove we are keeping tobacco sales under 20% to keep eligible for block grant funds.  When this program began in 1996 the “buy” rate was 40.3 percent.  To date for 2008 the rate is 9.6 %.  There is more I could say in explaining but I believe I have said enough for now and will not make the e-mail any longer than have to at this time.

The reason I am sending this to all of you is I am looking to recruit youth.  I  need a youth to help me in Jefferson, Franklin, Washington and St Francois and Ste Genevieve Counties.  I have been taking a youth from here (Poplar Bluff) to Washington, St Francois and Ste Genevieve Counties.  I was recently assigned Jefferson and Franklin so if can recruit a youth from up there would work more counties from that area.

Also, for southwest, I need a youth to help in six or so counties surrounding West Plains and North.  Currently I do not have a youth for Rolla area.

When a youth goes with me they will get at least $4.50 for each outlet we inspect.  I purchase snacks and meals.

I submit a report within first 5 days of each month for previous month and the youth usually receives check by 10th.

I don’t recall any being later than the 15th.

Personal information.  I am 60 years old, a Christian and married to my sweetie for 37 years.  We have two daughters.

Each daughter has one child.  One a boy 8 years old here at Poplar Bluff.  One a girl 5 years old in Morton, IL.

If any of you know of a family with an eligible teenager I would appreciate you putting me in contact with me.  We could discuss further all the details.
